## ABOUT THE GAME ###############################################################

The Heist is a short game made for the fourth One Room One Week Competition.
Despite the name of the competition, the submitted games are allowed to have
more than one playable room. The reason why we participated in this competition
is that we wanted to experiment something we haven't tried before.

The game is made for 640x480 resolution but we also made sure that you could
play the game in 320x240 if you have a slower computer. The game checks the
resolution and uses smaller fonts for 320x240.

NOTE: Before you start the game, if the DivX codec is set to decode DivX
compressed videos on your computer, you should run the Divx Toolbar Toggel Tool
and Divx Fix.reg! (See troubleshooting for more info)

## THE STORY ####################################################################

You play as a burglar who has decided to steal valuable jewelry from the Marmous
manor in a small town. A rich woman, Lady Marmous, lives there. The goal is set,
now you have to plan your heist carefully!

## HOW TO PLAY ##################################################################

 Mouse controls:
   left click ..... interact
   right click .... examine
   wheel .......... browse inventory

 Keyboard controls:
   TAB ............ open inventory
   F5 ............. save game
   F7 ............. load game
   F9 ............. restart
ESC ............ main menu / skip cut scenes
   Ctrl+Q ......... quit
D .............. disable videos (only if you really REALLY don't want to watch them)

The inventory opens when you click on the arrow on the money gui. Everything else
 should be quite self-explanatory.

Don't panic if you don't see the player character anywhere: YOU are the player.
There is no need for a character who just walks SO VERY SLOWLY around the screen.

The town consists of three places where you can go: Gary's Tools (a hardware
store), the manor and the park. Your goal is to get inside the manor and steal
the jewelry. You can purchase stuff that helps you with your burglary at Gary's
Tools. At first you only have $20 cash but you can get more by going to the park
and robbing people in a mini game.

There are multiple solutions to each stage of the heist and you can even finish
the game with the $20 you have in the beginning. So keep playing the game until
 you've tried every solution ;)

There is one last thing you should know: the police. No, not the band. If you do
something suspicious that catches somebody's attention they will most likely
inform the police and a timer will appear to the top right corner of the screen.
If you run out of time before you've finished your heist, the police will catch
you and the game ends. In the park you can mess up two times without worrying
about the police. If you mess up a third time, however, you're in trouble.
NOTE: The police count down doesn't pause when you open the menu or text boxes
are displayed or even save the game!

## TROUBLESHOOTING ##############################################################

 1. I don't see the videos

Make sure you have installed the newest DivX codec on your system
(www.divx.com), it's free. The videos are actually compressed with XviD but
DivX will decode them by default. If you don't want to download DivX, you can
download XviD (www.koepi.org) but make sure that in the decoder configuration
"DIVX" FourCC is checked. FFDShow is another possibility which supports
    multiple codecs.

 2. There is are a couple of black frames before video playback begins

This is a problem with AGS, nothing can be done about it at the moment.

 3. Video playback doesn't start until I click on the game window
DivX Settings Manager steals focus (a DivX icon appears to the system tray)

Extract the exe from DivXToolbarToggleTool.zip and run it. On the select
operations page select "Turn off the DivX Toolbar" and click "Install".
Now everything should work properly. If you plan to play the game full
screen, double click on the DivX Fix.reg file and click "Yes", the reg
file applies the following modification which can also be made manually:

    1. Click "Start" and then "Run"
    2. Type "regedit" click "OK"
    3. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\DivXNetworks\DivX\SMExclusions from
the tree view on the left. If SMExclusions isn't there you probably have
an older version of DivX. Install the newest version (www.divx.com) and
       try again.
    4. On the right you can see programs that don't trigger the settings manager.
    5. From the menu choose Edit -> New -> String value. A new value appears to
       the list.
    6. Double click on the new value and type a name ("The Heist" for example)
and to value data type "The Heist.exe"
    7. Click "OK"
    8. Close registry editor. Now the settings manager shouldn't appear while
       you play The Heist.

 4. I play the game in full screen and when a video starts to play the windows
    desktop appears

Apparently this can't be fixed with the DivX Toolbar Toggle Tool, but it
can be fixed by modifying the registry manually. (See #3)

 5. There is a DivX watermark on the videos

Disable it from the DivX decoder settings
(Start -> Programs -> DivX -> DivX codec -> Decoder configuration utility)
The option is either on the toolbar page (Show DivX logo watermark) or on
the quality settings page (Disable Logo) depending on the version.

 6. If the videos don't play properly and you don't want to download new codecs
or you just don't want to watch the videos, remove *.dt files from the data
folder or press D during the game. One option, of course, is to replace the
videos with porn - that should spice things up a bit.

 7. I found a bug / the game crashed, what do I do?

Send the bug report or error message by email to xxxxxxxx@xxxxxxxx.xxx
(the correct address will be added when the voting has finished)
